Some Interesting & Creative Things We've Done

What do Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Leslie Moonves Have in Common?

Along with Stacey Snider, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Barry Meyer, and Magic Johnson, they were honorees at American Jewish Committee dinners for which BM&A handled all of the public relations efforts. And to top it off, Oprah Winfrey served as keynoter for two of the honorees - - Steven Spielberg and producer Joe Roth.

A Flag for Hollywood

Interested in creating a community outreach project, a development company came to us for assistance. To meet their need, we created a Hollywood Flag Design Contest, working with local schools for submissions. The semifinalists’ entries were displayed at the legendary Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for the panel of esteemed judges, that included world-famous artist David Hockney.

After the winner was chosen, we produced a flag raising ceremony atop the building on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard. and Highland Avenue, generating a considerable amount of media.

LA Becomes a Living Museum

BM&A planned and implemented a campaign for the Los Angeles Conservancy’s first-ever “living museum” project. Funded by a grant from the Getty Foundation, “Curating the City: Wilshire Boulevard” turned the renowned thoroughfare into a museum by showcasing an aspect of the city’s historic built environment. We handled all media relations, created new alliances and partnerships for the Conservancy, brought media sponsors on board, and worked closely with all participating organizations.

1001 Celebrities

For four years, Barbara served as Executive in Charge of Talent for public television station KCET-TV, often booking talent for 125 spots in a single pledge drive. The key was to book talent that were “thematically” appropriate for each program. She booked hundreds of actors, musicians, authors, broadcast journalists, and other luminaries throughout the years.

American Honda/Mario J. Machado Scholarship Awards Essay Contest and Awards Luncheon

Working closely with the Los Angeles Unified School District, BM&A administered Honda’s essay competition. Named for veteran broadcaster Mario J. Machado, the contest awarded 12 students, $1,000 each. In addition, we produced the annual awards luncheon at LA’s Music Center, handling all details, including booking the keynote speaker.

We Bring You National Parent Leadership Month

To build awareness of the national child abuse prevention organization, Parents Anonymous® Inc., we created National Parent Leadership Month. The philosophy behind Parent Leadership is that it empowers parents and decreases child abuse and neglect. Founded in 2004, NPLM is celebrated each year across the country.

So, is “The Sonny and Cher Show” a musical or a comedy?

Founded by comedian Alan King, the American Academy of Humor was created as the basis for an awards program that was broadcast on ABC-TV. Barbara served as Administrative Director, single-handedly created a ballot from scratch and was the Associate Producer of the ABC special for two years. And, for the record, Sonny and Cher made it onto the ballot.

One-on-One with Public Health Royalty

BM&A created a newsletter called “Public Health Outlook” for Public Health Foundation Enterprises. Each issue included a one-on-one interview with a public health luminary. Over the years, Barbara interviewed: Dr. William Foege, credited with having found the cure for smallpox and former senior advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Dr. Fernando Torres-Gil, the first-ever Assistant Secretary on Aging; Dr. Lester Breslow, Professor & Dean Emeritus, UCLA, School of Public Health; Former State Senator Diane Watson; Dr. Joyce Lashof, Dean Emeritus, UC Berkeley, School of Public Health, and others.

UCLA Instructor

Barbara served as an instructor for five years with UCLA’s Extension Program where she taught “Public Relations for Nonprofit Organizations,” a required course for two certificate programs.

Today, a Trip Down Your Toilet

As part of a campaign to educate the public about the many facets of public health, Barbara co-produced a series of two-minute educational and entertaining radio programs that included “The Disease Detectives,” “Myth of the Tooth Worms,” and “The Great London Fog.”

And a Columnist, Too

Barbara wrote a monthly column, “Scene from Los Angeles,” for Southern California Senior Life Magazine, for 1-1/2 years. Given great freedom, she featured everything from interviews with interesting seniors, timely and relevant issues, and newly published books to upcoming events and programs, restaurants and adventures with her 90-year-old mother.
